3 drug traffickers nabbed in Sakhipur
Three alleged drug traffickers have been arrested with 100 kilograms of cannabis during an anti-drug operation conducted by the Special Response Battalion (SRB)-14, CPC-3, in Sakhipur, Tangail.
A covered van allegedly used to transport the drugs, a motorcycle used as an escort vehicle, cash and three mobile phones were also seized during the operation.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Md Ashraful Alam, 39, of Mymensingh; Md Raju Islam, 30, of Cumilla; and Helal Mia, 42, of Sakhipur upazila in Tangail.
The information was disclosed in a press release issued on Sunday by the Senior Assistant Director and Media Officer of SRB-14 on behalf of its commander.
According to the press release, acting on a tip-off, an SRB-14 operational team from CPC-3 set up a checkpoint on the paved road at Betua Tin Rastar Mor in Sakhipur at around 2:30am on the night of October 3.
At that time, the team stopped and searched a covered van and a motorcycle that was allegedly escorting the vehicle.
Azharul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Sakhipur Police Station, said a case had been filed against the accused under the Narcotics Control Act and that they had been sent to the Tangail court.
During interrogation, the detainees admitted that illegal drugs were being carried in the covered van. Based on information provided by them, the team later recovered 100 kilograms of cannabis concealed inside plastic sacks in a specially modified compartment of the covered van.
In addition to the covered van and motorcycle, cash and three mobile phones were also seized during the operation.
SRB officials said preliminary interrogation revealed that the arrested individuals had allegedly been involved in collecting cannabis from different parts of the country, keeping it in their possession and selling it in Tangail and other areas for a long time.
The arrested individuals, along with the seized drugs and other evidence, were handed over to Sakhipur Police Station for further legal action.
