DSCC to build playground at cleared drug den site within a month

A playground will be built within a month on a site cleared after the eviction of an illegal settlement in Dhaka’s Faridabad area, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Abdus Salam said on Thursday.

The site is located in the IG Gate area of Ward 47, where the DSCC administrator said an illegal settlement had occupied government land for around 48 to 50 years.

Abdus Salam made the announcement after inspecting tree plantation, waste management, mosquito control, footpath and road development activities in the Bangladesh Bank Colony area near Faridabad on Thursday.

He said the site had been known locally as a centre for drug use and sales.
“After the eviction, the area has been freed from this long-standing ‘sore,'” he said.

He said the cleared site would be developed as a playground for children and adolescents, while a new road would also be constructed in the adjacent area.

“If there is sufficient space, there are plans to build a community centre there as well,” the DSCC administrator said.

He said he would inaugurate the newly built playground after one month.

Abdus Salam thanked Deputy Commissioner of Police of Wari Zone Mallik Ahsan Uddin Samis and other police officials for their cooperation in the eviction drive.

Urging young people and local residents to come forward in public welfare activities, he called for cooperation with the police and administration to build a drug-free area.

“If the administration wants the best and the people of the area remain united, many seemingly impossible things can be achieved,” he said.

He also directed BNP leaders and activists at all levels in the area to work for its overall development and remain beside local residents.

The DSCC administrator said development work worth Tk11 crore was currently underway in Ward 47, while another Tk4 crore in work had been approved.

This means development projects worth a total of Tk15 crore are currently being implemented in the ward, he said.

During the inspection, Abdus Salam planted a tree at the cleared site and took part in larviciding activities in the Bangladesh Bank Colony.

He also urged city residents to keep their surroundings clean to prevent dengue and ensure that water did not remain stagnant for more than three days.

Dhaka South BNP Member Secretary Tanvir Ahmed Robin, DSCC Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Md Mahbubur Rahman Talukdar, Chief Health Officer Dr Jahane Ferdous Binte Rahman, DCP Mallik Ahsan Uddin Samis, senior DSCC officials and local dignitaries attended the programme.
