World Habitat Day celebrated in Sylhet
World Habitat Day 2026 was celebrated in Sylhet in a festive atmosphere with the theme “Housing for All, Sustainable Urbanization”.
The first day of a two-day programme organised by the Sylhet Development Authority (SDA), a colourful rally and balloon release were held on Monday . Speakers at a discussion meeting and the official inauguration ceremony of the event urged environmentally friendly, planned and balanced urban development in Sylhet.
SDA Chairman (Additional Secretary rank) Rezaul Hasan Koyes Ludi presided over the programme.
Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Md Mofizur Rahman, Additional Chief Engineer Kazi Wasif Ahmed, Sylhet Range DIG Mohammad Jahangir Hossain, Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sayem Prodhan Shamim (PPM), Public Works Department Sylhet Executive Engineer Abu Zafar Princh, Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate of Sylhet Abdullah Al Mamun, Sylhet District Police Superintendent Dr Chowdhury Md Jaber Sadek, Jalalabad Gas Director Md Badruzzaman Selim.
and SDA Executive Director (Senior Assistant Secretary) Md Sadiur Rahim Jadid were present.
In his speech, SDA Chairman Rezaul Hasan Koyes Ludi said, “Sylhet Development Authority is working relentlessly with the determination to build a smart and sustainable Sylhet.”
Presiding over the event, Koyes Ludi said, “Ensuring safe housing and maintaining environmental balance in rapidly growing cities are the main challenges of the present time.
The government is committed to creating universal housing opportunities for every citizen and expanding modern urban facilities. An integrated master plan will be implemented to develop Sylhet as a liveable, green and planned city.”
Special guests at the event, in their speeches, highlighted the importance of environmental protection, improved traffic management and strengthening housing facilities for the general public as part of urban planning.
