Aman cultivation target surpasses in Madhukhali
Transplanted Aman cultivation has surpassed the target in Faridpur’s Madhukhali Upazila this year. According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), the cultivation target for the current season was exceeded across the upazila’s 11 unions and one municipality.
Last year (2025-26 fiscal year), transplanted Aman was cultivated on 8,610 hectares of land.
For the current 2026-27 fiscal year, the target was set at 8,660 hectares. However, cultivation actually took place on 8,690 hectares, exceeding the target by 30 hectares. Meanwhile, farmers are optimistic about a good yield this year.
Madhukhali Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Mahabub Elahi said several varieties of transplanted Aman rice including BRRI-87, BRRI Dhan-75, BRRI Dhan-103, Bina Dhan-17, Bina Dhan-22 and ‘Atash’were cultivated. Md Abdul Hai Bashi Mia, a model farmer from Ward No. 2 of Madhukhali Municipality, said cultivation of various rice varieties had increased slightly this year. Although rainfall was somewhat scarce, farmers faced higher production costs due to rising fuel prices.
He expressed hope for a good harvest, saying farmers would benefit if the government purchased paddy directly from them at a fair price. Last year, the local administration, acting on behalf of the government, procured very little paddy directly from farmers and sourced most of it from traders. Consequently, ordinary farmers did not receive the government-fixed price.
He urged the authorities to procure paddy directly from farmers at the fixed rate. He further said that while the government-fixed price was Tk 1,440 per maund last year, many farmers complained that their produce was not purchased directly.
Instead, paddy was sold for Tk 1,100 to Tk 1,150 per maund in local markets, as local authorities procured the majority of the stock from traders at the government rate, leaving farmers deprived. Despite slightly lower rainfall this season, farmers have cultivated rice beyond the initial target, and a high yield is anticipated.
This year, transplanted Aman rice was cultivated on 8,690 hectares across the upazila’s one municipality and 11 unions, representing an increase of 30 hectares over the target.
A high yield is expected, with projected production of 27,600 metric tonnes of rice from the cultivated land.
