Mother allegedly gang-raped

A violent break-in allegedly involving hostage-taking, sexual assault, robbery and threats to circulate a video has raised fresh concerns over law and order in Mymensingh, with police detaining one of five suspects.

The incident reportedly took place at about 8pm on 17 September at the home of an expatriate in Gafargaon upazila. Police detained Md Rajib, 23, during an operation later that night. The victim filed a complaint with Gafargaon Police Station on Friday afternoon.

Montosh Biswas, Additional Superintendent of Police (Gafargaon Circle) in Mymensingh, confirmed the incident on Saturday.

According to the complaint, police and local sources, five young men, including Sharif Mia, 23, and Arif Mia, 21, went to the house at around 8pm on Thursday and initially asked for water.

When the expatriate’s ninth-grade son came to the door with water, the group allegedly held him hostage at gunpoint before entering the house.

The attackers allegedly vandalised the property and took about Tk5 lakh that had been kept in a wardrobe for house construction, along with gold ornaments and other valuables.

The woman also alleged that two members of the group sexually assaulted her while the others remained outside. Police said the complaint includes allegations of gang rape, hostage-taking, vandalism and theft.

The victim further alleged that Rajib recorded the assault on his mobile phone and later threatened to circulate the footage on social media unless she paid an additional Tk2 lakh within three days.

Police said neighbours heard the victims’ screams and alerted them, prompting officers to launch an operation that night. At around 3am, Rajib was detained from a secluded area about one kilometre from the house.

According to police, Rajib threw the mobile phone allegedly used to record the incident into nearby water when officers moved to detain him. Police later recovered the device.

The victim’s brother-in-law said that after her elder daughter’s marriage, the woman had been living at the house with her ninth-grade son. He said the assailants held his nephew hostage before assaulting his sister-in-law.

Montosh Biswas said the woman had named five men in her complaint. He said two were accused of carrying out the sexual assault, while the others allegedly remained outside the house.

Police are also investigating the alleged recording and extortion threat. The process of formally registering the case was under way, while operations continued to arrest the remaining suspects.
