JU student found dead at Dhaka mess

The body of Anik Chandra Pal, a student of Jagannath University (JU), was found dead at a mess in the Chankharpul-Kayetuli area under Bangshal Police Station in the capital on Tuesday night.

Anik, a student of the Drawing and Painting Department from the 2023-24 academic session, was found unresponsive in his room at around 9:30pm.

His body was later taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the attending physician declared him dead.

According to his mess-mate and fellow JU student Joy Bhuiyan, Anik had been difficult to reach since Monday.

On Tuesday night, one of his batchmates, unable to contact him by phone, asked others to check on him. When they received no response after knocking on the door, they became concerned and entered the room through a window before taking him to the hospital.

Habibur Rahman, inspector-in-charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, confirmed the death, citing the attending physician.

He said the body had been kept at the hospital morgue and that the matter had been reported to the concerned police station.

Anik’s family home is reportedly in Shibpur upazila of Sylhet district.

According to his classmates and mess-mates, Anik had recently gone through a breakup and had reportedly become withdrawn afterward.

His mobile phone was also found switched off. However, authorities have not publicly confirmed that the breakup was a cause of his death.

The circumstances surrounding the death are expected to be clarified through the police investigation and other relevant procedures.
