Don on 5-day remand in Salman Shah death case

Film actor Ashraful Haque Don was placed on a five-day remand by a Dhaka court on Thursday in the murder case over the death of film star Salman Shah, as the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) continued its probe into the long-running case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana passed the remand order after CID Inspector Mujibur Rahman sought seven days’ remand for Don on August 20.

Don was arrested by immigration police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on August 9 and subsequently handed over to the CID.

He was sent to jail the same day, while a court rejected his bail petition on August 12.

The latest remand comes amid renewed investigation into the death of Salman Shah, whose real name was Chowdhury Mohammad Shahriar Emon.

Salman Shah died on September 6, 1996. His father, Kamruddin Ahmed Chowdhury, initially filed an unnatural death case following his death.

On July 24, 1997, his father sought to have the case converted into a murder case, alleging that his son had been killed.

The court later directed the CID to investigate both the unnatural death case and the murder allegation together.

The latest murder case was filed on October 20 last year by Salman Shah’s maternal uncle Mohammad Alomgir Kumkum with Ramna Model Police Station.

The other accused include Salman Shah’s former wife Samira Haque, her mother Latifa Haque Luchi, businessman Aziz Mohammad Bhai, Debit, Javed and Faruk, as well as Ruby, Abdul Sattar, Saju and Rezvi Ahmed alias Farhad.

Earlier on October 20, a court directed the officer-in-charge of Ramna Police Station to register the previously filed unnatural death case over Salman Shah’s death as a murder case.

The latest court order places Don in five days’ remand as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the actor’s death nearly three decades ago.
