950 kg of horse meat seized
Police have seized approximately 950 kg of horse meat in Jamalpur while it was being transported for supply to various restaurants in Dhaka. Five individuals involved in the incident were detained and given varying terms of imprisonment and fines by a mobile court. The operation was conducted on Sunday in the Narundi area of Jamalpur Sadar Upazila.
Police said that, based on confidential information, a search was conducted on a pickup van heading toward Jatrabari at the Narundi Chakbazar area early Sunday morning. A large quantity of horse meat, stored in 13 sacks, was recovered. The meat was being taken from the Mirapur Ghat area of Sadar Upazila to Dhaka.
It is preliminarily believed that the meat was being sent for supply as food to various hotels in Dhaka.
Later, on Sunday afternoon, a mobile court led by Jamalpur Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Imon Hossain sentenced the detained individuals to 6 months and 2 months respectively.
The sentenced individuals are: Jewel, Shahid Mia, Afzal Mia, Humayun, and Rasel Mia. They were also fined a total of Tk 1,01,000.
Md. Nazmul Haque, in-charge of Narundi Investigation Center, said, “A dishonest gang has been involved in this business for a long time. Operations have been conducted at various times before to catch them, but they managed to flee. This time, five people, along with this large consignment of meat, have been caught red-handed.”
He also said that police investigation is ongoing to identify the source of this meat and who else may be involved with the gang.
