6 more killed in dengue
Six people died of dengue and 1,561 new patients were hospitalised across the country in the 24 hours until 8:00am on Sunday, taking the total number of deaths from the mosquito-borne disease to 149 this year.
The latest figures were reported by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in its regular dengue situation report.
The new fatalities were recorded in four divisions. Chattogram and Khulna divisions reported two deaths each, while Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions recorded one death each during the 24-hour period.
The number of new hospital admissions remained high across the country, with Dhaka Division accounting for the largest share of the latest cases.
According to the DGHS report, 627 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka Division during the period. Chattogram Division recorded 181 new admissions, while 275 patients were hospitalised in Khulna Division.
Barishal Division reported 202 new dengue patients, followed by 104 in Rajshahi, 93 in Mymensingh, 73 in Rangpur and six in Sylhet.
With the latest admissions, the number of dengue patients hospitalised across Bangladesh since January 1 reached 51,837 this year.
The DGHS data also showed that 1,394 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals in the latest 24-hour period after recovering from the disease.
The total number of patients who have recovered and returned home after receiving treatment in hospitals reached 48,093 this year.
The figures indicate that thousands of dengue patients are still receiving treatment at hospitals across the country as new admissions continue to rise.
The latest deaths have also pushed the overall dengue fatality figure to 149 in 2026.
The disease has continued to place pressure on hospitals as the number of patients requiring treatment increases.
Of the 1,561 patients admitted during the latest reporting period, 627 were hospitalised in Dhaka Division, making it the division with the highest number of new admissions. Khulna followed with 275, while Barishal recorded 202 and Chattogram 181.
The DGHS has been maintaining nationwide dengue hospitalisation and death records as part of its regular disease surveillance.
The health authorities’ latest report comes amid a sharp increase in dengue hospitalisations in September.
