India retracts notice on PM’s welcome
Bangladesh-India ties remained in focus as the two countries continued discussions over a possible visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to New Delhi, with India briefly issuing and then withdrawing a communique that appeared to indicate preparations for a ceremonial welcome.
The development comes amid ongoing diplomatic engagement between Dhaka and Delhi over the proposed trip, with no official confirmation of the visit available from either side.
In a press release issued this afternoon, the Indian President’s Secretariat said the Change of Guard Ceremony at the Forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan would not be held on Saturday, 22 August, because a full rehearsal was scheduled for the ceremonial welcome of the Bangladeshi prime minister.
The statement was posted by India’s Press Information Bureau at 2:25pm but was subsequently recalled.
The withdrawal of the statement has added uncertainty over the timing and arrangements for Tarique’s possible visit, as Dhaka and New Delhi continue discussions.
No immediate official comment was available from authorities in either Dhaka or New Delhi on why the statement was withdrawn or whether preparations for the proposed visit were continuing.
The episode comes at a sensitive point in Bangladesh-India relations, with both sides seeking to maintain diplomatic engagement and address a range of bilateral issues.
While the Indian statement appeared to suggest that arrangements for a formal reception were under way, its subsequent withdrawal leaves the status of the proposed visit unclear.
The Change of Guard ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan is a regular ceremonial event, and its cancellation for a full rehearsal would normally indicate preparations for a major state-level reception.
However, neither government has publicly confirmed the details of Tarique’s proposed programme.
Further developments are expected as Dhaka and Delhi continue consultations over the visit.
