2 fingers, 1 leg, limitless dreams: An indomitable Adori of Bogura

To hear her story is to listen to a modern-day fairytale. She is a primary school teacher with a Master’s degree, a successful agricultural entrepreneur, and a skilled boutique artist. Beyond her professional triumphs, she manages her household flawlessly and has raised her children with exemplary education.

However, this is no fairytale; it is the real-life saga of Adori Khatun from Dhawa Kola village in Bogura. With just two fingers on her left hand and a prosthetic leg, she has conquered the impossible.

Born with severe physical challenges, Adori’s arms are shorter than usual, with her right hand lacking any distinct shape. Her left hand has only two fingers. She was also born missing a leg.

Yet, these physical limitations could not deter her spirit.

Recalling her early days, Adori says, “The journey to school was never easy. Sometimes I crawled, and other times I hopped on one leg to reach my classes. But I have no regrets. Despite my physical condition, I am immensely grateful to the Almighty.”

Holding a pen with those two tiny fingers, she successfully earned her Master’s degree.

Today, she serves as a teacher at Dhawa Kola Government Primary School. A colleague proudly notes, “Although she is physically challenged, she works twice as hard as anyone else. She is unequivocally the most beloved teacher among our little students.”

Her journey to self-reliance was fraught with societal hurdles. When she sought skill development training, authorities turned her away, citing her physical condition.

This rejection only fueled her determination. Adori firmly refuses to be labeled as ‘disabled’. She states profoundly, “If a healthy person is unable or unwilling to do a job, they are the ones who are truly disabled.”

Driven by sheer willpower, she established a 12-bigha guava orchard. While tending to the trees and holding a freshly plucked guava, she beams, “I am fully successful in guava farming today.” Alongside agriculture, she has also mastered boutique and tailoring work.

Life tested her again when her husband went abroad shortly after their first child was born. Left alone to manage the household and a newborn, she did not break. Through relentless effort, she secured a highly coveted government job based purely on merit. Respecting her incredible struggle, her husband eventually returned to Bangladesh to stand by her side.

The same hands that shaped her destiny are now shaping her children’s futures. Her elder son achieved a Golden A+ in his SSC examinations from Bogura Zilla School this year.

For those who easily drown in despair at the slightest obstacle, Adori Khatun stands as a beacon of hope. She has proven that with indomitable willpower, a woman can overcome any barrier and contribute equally to the nation’s progress.
