Patriotism vital for maintaining law and order: IGP
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir has urged police officers to perform their duties with mettle and dedication to maintain law and order in the country, being infused by patriotism.
He made the call at a special meeting on law and order with senior police officials held at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium in the city’s Rajarbagh Police lines on Thursday.
The IGP said maintaining normal law and order in the capital is essential for the stability of the entire country as people from all walks of life, including foreign and local diplomats, live in Dhaka.
He stressed the need for increased direct monitoring by senior officers and proper supervision to make field-level policing more dynamic, saying effective supervision encourages police personnel at lower levels to work spontaneously.
“You will work in the national interest and for establishing peace among the people without bowing down to injustice,” the IGP said.
However, he warned that the police force would not take responsibility for intentional mistakes or attempts to serve personal interests, and strict action would be taken in such cases.
Emphasising political neutrality and professionalism, Md Ali Hossain Fakir said, “Irrespective of political beliefs, the identity of the police is one—we are servants of the law and the people.”
He said the police would maintain a zero-tolerance policy against drugs.
The IGP also said cybercrime, rumours and misinformation and disinformation on social media have emerged as major challenges for police compared with traditional crimes.
He urged all concerned to remain alert against attempts to make the police ineffective and against misleading information.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, Additional IGP Khandaker Rafiqul Islam and officials from different levels of Bangladesh Police attended the meeting.
