Is BD’s weather losing its rhythm?
Bangladesh is experiencing a mixed monsoon pattern, with humid and uncomfortable conditions in Dhaka alongside forecasts of widespread rain and thunderstorms across several parts of the country over the coming days.
A low-pressure area has formed over the North Bay and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh, prompting forecasts of increased rainfall across the country over the next five days, while Dhaka is likely to remain mostly dry and humid today.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the low-pressure system is likely to intensify. The monsoon trough is extending through Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal before passing through the centre of the low-pressure area towards Assam across southern Bangladesh.
The department said the southwest monsoon is currently fairly active over Bangladesh and strong over the North Bay, increasing the likelihood of rain in different parts of the country.
For Dhaka and its adjoining areas, the weather may remain mostly dry today, although partly cloudy skies are expected. Winds may blow from the south or southeast at 8-12 kilometres per hour, while daytime temperatures are likely to remain nearly unchanged.
At 6am on Wednesday, Dhaka recorded a temperature of 27°C, with relative humidity at 96%. The capital’s highest temperature on Tuesday was 35.5°C, while the minimum temperature recorded on Wednesday was 26.8°C. The high humidity is likely to make the weather feel hotter and more uncomfortable despite the partly cloudy conditions.
Rain forecast across the country
The BMD said that until 9am Thursday, light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds are likely in many places of Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions.
Some places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions may also experience rain or thundershowers. Moderate to heavy rainfall may occur at some places across the country.
Daytime temperatures may remain nearly unchanged, while nighttime temperatures could fall slightly.
From 9am Thursday to 9am Friday, rain or thundershowers are likely to continue in many areas of Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions and in some areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions.
The department has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall at some places during the period. Both day and night temperatures may fall by 1-2°C across the country.
Rain to persist through the weekend
The wet weather is expected to continue through the weekend.
From 9am Friday to 9am Saturday, light to moderate rain or thundershowers, accompanied by temporary gusty winds, are likely in many places of Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions and in some places of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions. Moderate to heavy rainfall may occur at some places, while temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged.
On Saturday, rain or thundershowers are likely in many areas of Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, while some areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka and Mymensingh may also receive rainfall. Moderate to heavy rain may occur at some places.
The forecast remains similar for Sunday, with rain or thundershowers expected in many areas of Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and in some places of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka and Mymensingh.
Daytime temperatures may fall slightly on Sunday, while nighttime temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged.
More rain, slight drop in temperatures
The developing low-pressure system and active monsoon are expected to keep rainfall activity elevated across Bangladesh in the coming days. The BMD said the rainfall tendency may increase further, while both daytime and nighttime temperatures could gradually decline in some areas.
For Dhaka, however, the immediate forecast remains relatively dry, with partly cloudy skies and high humidity. The capital may therefore continue to experience hot and uncomfortable conditions before the anticipated increase in rainfall affects the city more directly.
The BMD has advised that temporary gusty winds may accompany thunderstorms in different parts of the country. With the low-pressure area likely to intensify and the monsoon remaining active, residents in the forecast areas should remain alert to changing weather conditions, particularly during periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms.
