Attempt to shoot Whip Dulu

Cop detain armed youth at minister's Natore rally

A man carrying a pistol was detained by police at a public rally attended by Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam Rita in Natore on Friday after officers foiled what they suspect was an attempt to target Whip Advocate Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu, MP.

The suspect, identified as Tanim Hossain, was detained from the rally venue in front of Uttara Gonobhaban at Dighapatia in Natore Sadar Upazila on Friday afternoon.

According to police, the intended target was local Member of Parliament and Chief Whip of the National Parliament Advocate Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu, who was present at the event alongside the tourism minister.

Natore Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mansur Rahman said Tanim was standing close to the stage while the minister was addressing the gathering after visiting Uttara Gonobhaban.

The OC said the suspect came into contact with the minister twice as she was stepping down from the stage. Police then intervened and detained him with a pistol when he allegedly attempted to open fire at Chief Whip Dulu.

“Tanim Hossain was trying to shoot at local Member of Parliament and Chief Whip Advocate Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu,” the OC said.

The detained man, Tanim Hossain, is the son of Shamsul Alam of Kanaikhali Mohalla in Natore Municipality.

The rally was attended by MP and Chief Whip Advocate Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu, Deputy Commissioner Asma Shahin, Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation Chairman Md Shamimuzzaman, senior district administration officials, and leaders and activists of the ruling party.

Tanim denied any intention to attack anyone, claiming the firearm had been brought solely for his personal safety.

“The pistol is licensed in my father’s name. I brought it for my own self-protection,” he said.
Police have taken Tanim into custody for questioning, and further legal proceedings are underway.
