MP Naser Rahman rebuffs obscene video
Allegations have arisen regarding the creation and dissemination on social media of fake, distorted, and obscene videos targeting M. Naser Rahman—Member of Parliament for the Moulvibazar-3 (Sadar-Rajnagar) constituency and a member of the BNP’s National Executive Committee—using artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Describing this as a calculated political smear campaign and an attempt at character assassination, he has announced plans to take legal action.
He also stated that measures have been initiated to swiftly bring those involved to justice. In an urgent message posted on his verified Facebook page on Saturday, M Naser Rahman said that his political opponents have recently been creating and circulating a fake, distorted, and obscene video—using artificial intelligence (AI) technology—with the malicious intent of politically disparaging him. The video creates misleading content by superimposing an image of his head onto another person’s body.
The aim is to belittle him personally and his political party in public. He said that such propaganda is not just against an individual but a deep conspiracy to establish a sick culture in politics. Attempts to mislead the public by spreading false and misleading information by misusing technology are in no way acceptable.
Nasser Rahman said that necessary legal action has been taken immediately after the incident. The relevant digital evidence has been preserved, technological analysis and Necessary measures to identify the perpetrators have already been initiated.
He further stated that a specialized government agency is working on the matter. Steps are being taken to swiftly identify, arrest, and bring to justice those involved in the creation and dissemination of fake videos. Urging the general public, he advised against sharing or circulating any fake or misleading AI-generated videos, images, or information on social media without verification.
Everyone must refrain from this, as the intentional dissemination or resharing of such content constitutes a punishable offense under existing information technology laws. He noted that one should not automatically accept information or videos seen on social media as true. In this era of technological advancement, it is possible to create highly realistic fake images and videos using AI; therefore, there is no alternative to awareness and fact-checking. According to political analysts, the misuse of artificial intelligence technology to create and spread fake images and videos.
The tendency to discredit political opponents is rising at an alarming rate worldwide. In Bangladesh, too, there is a pressing need for prompt investigations, technical analysis, and strict legal action against such incidents. Notably, M. Nasser Rahman brought the matter to public attention on Saturday through an urgent message posted on his verified Facebook page, urging the public to remain vigilant against rumors and fake AI-generated content.
