Dhaka University places 74th in inaugural global research ranking

The University of Dhaka (DU) has ranked 74th among 2,345 universities worldwide in the inaugural Family Business Research Index 2026, securing a place among the world’s top 100 institutions in the field.

The ranking was published by the WIFU Foundation, a German non-profit organisation, and released recently. The university disclosed the achievement in a press release issued on Wednesday.

The index evaluates universities’ contributions to family business research. It assesses research publications indexed in OpenAlex over the three-year period from 2023 to 2025, considering both the volume of research produced and the standing of the journals in which the studies appeared.

OpenAlex is a free, open-access database and knowledge graph containing information on research publications and related academic data from around the world. According to the WIFU Foundation, papers published in unranked journals received a score of zero in the index.

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam welcomed the achievement, describing it as a matter of joy and pride.

He said the recognition would encourage the university’s teachers and researchers in their academic and research activities.

The vice-chancellor said the university aimed to improve research quality, publish papers meeting international standards and generate new knowledge to strengthen its position internationally.

He added that DU would continue working to create a more supportive research environment and expand opportunities for research across the university.

Founded in 2009, the WIFU Foundation is headquartered in Witten, Germany. It works to advance research, education and knowledge exchange in family businesses, entrepreneurial families and the long-term development of family-owned enterprises.

The Family Business Research Index 2026 is the first edition of a ranking designed to assess universities’ research contributions in the family business field. Its assessment covers publications indexed in OpenAlex between 2023 and 2025, using research output and journal standing as key measures.
