Subrata Bain aide Bappi arrested

The Motijheel Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested alleged shooter Tanim Reza alias Bappi, described as an associate of top criminal Subrata Bain, along with four of his associates over an extortion and shooting case in the capital.

Police recovered three foreign firearms, seven rounds of ammunition and other weapons during the operation.

Additional Police Commissioner Mohammad Osman Gani disclosed the information at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road on Saturday.

Police said Tanim Reza Bappi was known as one of the controllers of Subrata Bain’s weapons cache and had links to several shooting incidents.

The DMP official said Bappi was also accused of carrying illegal arms and extorting businesses in the Motijheel area.

A total of seven cases have been filed against him with different police stations under DMP on charges including extortion, robbery, kidnapping, attempted murder, violence against women and children, and drug-related offences.

According to DMP, an operation was conducted around 7:00am on Friday near Hotel Purbani in Motijheel, leading to the arrest of Bappi and three of his associates.

Based on information obtained during interrogation, police later conducted another operation in North Kamalapur and arrested another associate with technological assistance.

The arrested individuals are: Tanim Reza alias Bappi (46), Mohammad Jewel (48), Shakil (27), Manik Kazi (50), Rakibul Islam Bhuiyan alias Rijon (35).

Police said criminals opened fire at the office of a leaseholder businessman at a sacrificial animal market in South Kamalapur on May 19.

The businessman had allegedly received threats through WhatsApp on May 15 from a foreign number demanding Tk10 lakh in extortion money and threatening his life.

During the investigation into the case filed with Motijheel Police Station, police found information linking Bappi and his associates to the incident.

However, they remained in hiding for a long time before the latest operation.
Following information from the arrested suspects, police conducted a late-night raid at Bappi’s office in South Kamalapur.

They recovered: One foreign revolver, 2 foreign pistols, 5 rounds of revolver ammunition, 2 rounds of pistol ammunition, 2 magazines, 1 electric shock gun, 1 foreign Chinese axe A separate case has been filed under the Arms Act over the recovery.

DMP said legal proceedings against the arrested suspects are underway, while efforts continue to arrest other associates and recover additional illegal weapons.

The investigating officer, SI Mominur Rahman of Motijheel Police Station, produced two accused before the court and sought a seven-day remand.
After hearing, the court granted the full seven-day remand.
