Five killed in Faridpur road crash

At least five people were killed and several others injured after a bus crashed into a stationary pick-up van on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur on Saturday night.

The accident occurred around 8pm in the Swadi area when a Dhaka-bound Narail Express bus travelling from Dhaka hit the broken-down pick-up van parked on the highway, leaving five people dead on the spot, according to police.

The identities of the deceased could not be confirmed immediately, said Helal Uddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bhanga Highway Police Station.

Following the crash, angry locals seized the bus and set it on fire in protest.

Members of the Highway Police and Fire Service, along with local residents, rushed to the spot after receiving information about the accident. They rescued the injured and took them to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex for treatment.

“We have initially confirmed the deaths of five people. The exact cause of the accident is being investigated,” the OC said.

The accident caused a temporary disruption to traffic movement on the busy highway. Police later took steps to clear the road and restore normal traffic flow.
