7 tonnes banned African magur seized in Jashore

A joint team of the district administration and fisheries department in a drive seized more than seven tonnes of banned African magur and fined a fish farmer Taka 20,000 for cultivating the fish in Chanchra Sabjibag area of the district town on Wednesday.

Executive Magistrate Bishal Kumar Jajodia conducted the mobile court and fined fish farmer Shafiqul Islam.

Upazila Fisheries Officer Ripon Kumar Ghosh said the drive was conducted after receiving information that banned African magur was being cultivated in the Chanchra Sabjibag area, reports BSS.

The seized fish were later distributed among a local orphanage and disadvantaged and poor people.
Besides, a fish trader has been fined Taka 5,000 for failing to produce documents related to the import and prescribed price of Indian hilsa during a market inspection.

The fine was imposed on Karnaphuli Fish, a fish wholesaler at the town’s Barabazar, during a drive conducted at the fish market around 11.30 am today.

The operation was led by Jashore Assistant Director of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) Selimuzzaman, who inspected retail and wholesale outlets to verify the purchase and sale of Indian Hilsa.
