ACC sues ex-Ctg mayor over Tk14cr unexplained assets

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against former Chattogram City Corporation mayor and former Chattogram city unit Awami League general secretary AJM Nasir Uddin for allegedly acquiring nearly Tk14 crore in assets inconsistent with his known sources of income by abusing his power.

ACC Chattogram Assistant Director Sayeed Ahmed Imran filed the case on Tuesday at his office as the complainant.

According to the ACC, as of June 30, 2024, Nasir had Tk2.30 crore in immovable assets and Tk26.38 crore in movable assets. His liabilities at the time stood at Tk6.18 crore.

After deducting his liabilities, his net assets were valued at Tk22.49 crore, the ACC said.

According to the commission’s inquiry, Nasir spent Tk18.12 crore on family and other expenses during the period. As a result, the total value of assets acquired by him stood at Tk40.61 crore.

Against this, the inquiry found that his legitimate income amounted to Tk26.62 crore.

The difference between his total acquired assets and his known legitimate income was Tk13.99 crore, according to the ACC.

Sayeed Ahmed Imran said Nasir had shown income from fish farming in his asset statement. However, the inquiry found no actual existence of any fish-farming operation owned by him.

The people with whom Nasir allegedly showed agreements for fish farming also told investigators that they had no such agreements with him and did not own any ponds, Imran said. He further said Nasir had allegedly acquired and possessed assets inconsistent with his known sources of income through corruption and abuse of power.

The case was filed over these allegations, the ACC official said.
