5 held over station cleaner murder case

Railway Police (GRP) of Bhairab arrested five people in connection with the murder case of Bobby Begum(65) , a cleaner and speech-impaired woman at Methikanda Railway Station in Raipura of Narsingdi.

The operation was assisted by members of the GRP detectives and RAB. They were arrested in a special operation conducted in different areas of Dhaka, Narsingdi and Brahmanbaria districts on July 9 and 10 in the early hours of the morning.

Bhairab, Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Said Ahmed confirmed the arrests. The arrested persons are Shakib Mia (20), Ilias Hossain (35), Billal Mia (25), Deen Islam (26) and Rifat Mia (20).

According to Railway Police , on July 5, around 2 am, miscreants beat up Bobby Begum while she was sleeping in an abandoned room at Methikanda Railway Station in Narsingdi.

At that time, about Tk. 20,000, which she had been saving for a long time, was snatched from her.

She suffered serious injuries to her eyes, face and various parts of her body in the attack.

Later, she was treated at Raipura Upazila Health Complex. However, as she felt uncomfortable staying in the hospital, she was kept in an abandoned room at the station.

When Bobby Begum fell ill again on the night of July 8, she was taken to Raipura Upazila Health Complex.

When her condition deteriorated there, the doctor on duty sent her to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital at around 1:15 am. However, she died on the way to the hospital.

In this incident, Shahin Miah , Assistant Station Master of Methikanda Railway Station, filed a case against unknown accused at Bhairab Railway Police Station on July 7.

It is learnt that Bobby Begum worked as a cleaner at Methikanda Railway Station for about 25 years. Her burial was completed at around 9pm on July 8 after the autopsy in the area adjacent to the station.

Raipura, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Masud Rana, Raipura OC Mojibur Rahman, Bhairab Railway Police Station OC Said Ahmed, police members, political leaders and more than a hundred local people participated in the funeral.

Bhairab, Railway Police Station OC Said Ahmed said that after the incident, he visited Methikanda Railway Station, met the injured Bobby Begum and provided her with financial assistance.

He said that the initial investigation has found evidence of the involvement of the arrested persons in the incident.

They were sent to jail through the court on July 10. The investigation into the case is ongoing and the drive to arrest others involved in the incident is ongoing.
