Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain urged people living in landslide-prone hill areas to move to safer places as continuous rainfall increased the risk of slope failures across the city on Wednesday.
During visits to several landslide-prone areas near hills across the city, the mayor spoke with residents and requested them to relocate immediately to avoid possible accidents.
He also instructed concerned officials and employees to strengthen monitoring in vulnerable areas and, if necessary, take appropriate measures in coordination with the local administration.
“There is nothing more valuable than human life. No one should remain in vulnerable areas ignoring the risk of landslides. Stay in designated safe shelters until the weather improves and follow the instructions of the administration. Even a moment of carelessness can lead to a major tragedy,” the mayor said.
He added that the Chattogram City Corporation was fully prepared to respond to disasters during the monsoon season and that all relevant departments were working in coordination to ensure the safety of the city’s residents and their property.
The mayor also urged residents to refrain from hill cutting and constructing settlements on vulnerable hill slopes. He called on the public to cooperate with the administration in responding to any emergency situation.
