Landslide triggers evacuation drive in Chattogram

Rain-soaked hills put Chattogram on edge as evacuation efforts intensify to avert disaster

Intermittent moderate to heavy rainfall has been lashing Chattogram under the influence of a low-pressure system, prompting the district administration to launch a miking campaign urging residents to evacuate landslide-prone areas.

The Chattogram district administration continued miking in vulnerable hill areas across the city, asking residents to move to safer locations on Monday.

Similar announcements were made in different parts of the city on Sunday night.
The district administration has also kept all shelter centres ready. Schools, colleges, mosques and madrasas located near the hills have been prepared to serve as temporary shelters.

Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah told reporters that the Bangladesh Meteorological Department had hoisted Local Warning Signal No. 3. In view of the forecast and the risk of landslides, the district administration has been urging people living in vulnerable hill areas to take shelter at designated centres.

Plaban Kumar Biswas, Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Chandgaon Circle, said miking is being carried out in and around Tankir Pahar, the Amin Jute Mills area, Paharika, Cooperative Residential Area, Contemporary House Construction area, Mia Pahar, and Railway Hill adjacent to Muradpur Railway Station.

He added that several nearby schools and madrasas have been designated as temporary shelters for residents evacuated from these high-risk areas.
