Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal Md Aminul Islam has said that legal action may be taken against the Awami League as an organisation if preliminary allegations against the party are found to be true in an investigation.
He made the remarks while talking to journalists at his office on Sunday.
The chief prosecutor said the head of a political party had submitted a written complaint, which was later forwarded to the investigation agency of the International Crimes Tribunal.
“The investigation agency is now looking into the complaint. If preliminary evidence is found against the Awami League as an organisation, there will be scope to take necessary action based on the investigation report,” he said.
Replying to another question, Aminul Islam said several cases against Sheikh Hasina are currently under trial, while investigation reports are yet to be submitted in some other cases.
He said Sheikh Hasina may face trial in several cases, including one related to the Shapla Chattar incident.
The chief prosecutor also said that Sheikh Hasina has already been sentenced in one case.
“It would be appropriate for her to return to the country and face trial,” he added.
