‘Bangladesh would have become Sikkim if fascists stayed’

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M. Rashiduzzaman Millat has said that Bangladesh would have become like Sikkim if the “fascists” had remained in power for another two or three years.

“We should learn from the way the fascist government fled to India, along with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and all her cabinet members, because of their repression and misdeeds,” he said.

“If we fail to learn from this, our future will be very bleak,” he made the remarks as the chief guest at a meeting of the Sherpur District Law and Order Committee on Sunday.

He alleged that during the “fascist” government’s tenure, officials of all government offices were controlled and made to work according to its directives.

“As a result, there has been no fair election in the country for nearly 20 years. The country has fallen behind because thousands of crores of taka have been siphoned abroad,” he said.

He further said, “We achieved independence in 1971 and sovereignty in 2024. We must remember those who sacrificed their lives for these achievements and work for the country’s development while upholding their spirit.”

The minister also assured that he would take prompt steps to establish tourism spots, hotels and motels under the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation in the Garo Hills area of Sherpur.

The law and order committee meeting was chaired by Sherpur Deputy Commissioner Farida Yasmin.
Sherpur-2 constituency lawmaker Engineer Mohammad Fahim Chowdhury, Sherpur-3 constituency lawmaker Md Mahmudul Haque Rubel, reserved women’s seat lawmaker Dr Sansila Jebrin Priyanka, Police Superintendent A K M Zahirul Islam, District Council Administrator Mamunur Rashid Palash, Civil Surgeon Dr Mohammad Shaheen, upazila nirbahi officers and other committee members attended the meeting.

Earlier, when the minister arrived at the Sherpur Circuit House, local BNP leaders welcomed him with bouquets. He was also given a guard of honour.
