Court places actor Zaher Alvi on 2 day remand

A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed television actor Zaher Alvi on a two-day remand in a case filed over allegations that he provoked his wife, Afra Ivnath Khan Ikra, to commit suicide.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Al Beruni Mir passed the order after the investigation officer, Abdul Malek, produced the actor before the court and sought a 10-day remand for further questioning.
The court granted a two-day remand instead of the period sought by the prosecution.

Earlier, on June 18, Alvi surrendered before a Dhaka court in connection with the case and was subsequently sent to jail. The court also rejected his bail petition filed through his lawyer.

The case stems from the death of Afra Ivnath Khan Ikra, who reportedly died by suicide at her residence in Mirpur DOHS in the capital on February 28 this year.

At the time, Alvi confirmed the incident through a post on his verified Facebook page. He stated that he was in Nepal for a shooting assignment when he received news of his wife’s death.

In the post, the actor said Ikra had taken her own life at their Mirpur DOHS residence and expressed shock over the incident.

He also requested time to cope with the tragedy and urged well-wishers and journalists not to spread misleading information.

Alvi further appealed for privacy for his family and asked people to pray for his late wife. He also referred to the couple’s child and requested consideration for the child’s future.

According to family information, Zaher Alvi and Ikra were married in 2010 and have a son together.
The investigation into the case is ongoing.
