Vegetable prices fall in Ishwardi

Consumers in Ishwardi are enjoying lower prices for lemons and various vegetables.Lemons are currently selling for as little as Tk 5-10 per kilogram, while most vegetables are priced below Tk 50 per kilogram.

Traders said the price decline is the result of a bumper harvest and an abundant supply of produce in the market.

A visit to Ishwardi market on Thursday (June 18) found that the China-3 variety of lemons, which sold for up to Tk 80 per bundle of four during Ramadan, is now being sold by weight from vans across the town.
Vendors are selling lemons at Tk 10 per kilogram and Tk 20 for two kilograms. Typically, one kilogram contains 15 to 16 lemons. In the wholesale market, lemons are being sold for as little as Tk 5 per kilogram.

“This year’s lemon production has been excellent. Although demand is strong, prices remain low because supply is abundant,” he said, adding that he sells three to four maunds of lemons daily.

Vegetable trader Md. Jewel said prices have remained low due to a steady supply in the market.
“Customers are shopping comfortably and are satisfied with the current prices,” he said.

He added that lemon prices have fallen significantly because it is now peak season and production has been exceptionally high.

Mazaharul Islam, a trader who purchases lemons from Dapunia Union in Pabna and sells them from a van in Ishwardi, said demand for lemons remains high due to the intense summer heat.

Vegetable prices are also within consumers’ reach. Except for cauliflower, almost all vegetables are selling for less than Tk 50 per kilogram.

Currently, eggplant is priced at Tk 40 per kilogram. Other vegetables include potatoes at Tk 20, pointed gourd at Tk 30, okra at Tk 15, papaya at Tk 30, ridge gourd at Tk 30, bitter gourd at Tk 40, cucumber at Tk 40, teasel gourd at Tk 40, yardlong beans at Tk 30, cauliflower at Tk 50, and sweet pumpkin at Tk 25 per kilogram.

Green chilies are selling at Tk 30-40 per kilogram, while onions are priced at Tk 30-35 per kilogram. Bottle gourds are selling for Tk 40-50 each. Malabar spinach and red amaranth are available at Tk 10 per bundle.
