Abahani edge past Fortis FC
Dhaka Abahani Limited edged past Fortis Football Club by a solitary goal in their 14th match of the Bangladesh Football League at Shaheed Dhirendranath Dutta Stadium in Cumilla on Friday.
Dhaka Abahani Limited took the second position in the points table bagging 28 points from 14 matches, while Fortis Football Club took the third position collecting 25 points from as many matches.
Bashundhara Kings led the points table gaining 28 points from 13 matches.
Dhaka Abahani Limited and Fortis Football Club (FC) were fighting for the title with Bashundhara Kings. As soon as the match started, Fortis FC fell behind.
The failure of Forties Football Club’s defenders were more than the success of Abahani’s forwards. Abahani footballer cross from the right side, Fortis goalie Sujan Perera came out of the post. Defender Mithu Chowdhury was also trying to clear the ball.
Due to the lack of coordination between the two booters, the ball hit the feet of the SAFF U-20 winning Captain Mithu Chowdhury and went into the net. Abahani got the lead in just 45 seconds.
Fortis had to pay for the mistake of Mithu Chowdhury. Abahani could not score any more goals in the rest of the match.
Fortis also failed to equalise despite several attacks. In the final moments of the match, Fortis’ forawrd’s shot went wide of Abahani’s post.
In another match of Bangladesh Football League on the same day at Shaheed Miraj-Tapan Stadium in Manikganj, Arambagh Krira Sangha defeated Rahmatganj Muslim Friends and Society by 1-0. Arambagh’s win opened the relegation zone.
Youngmen’s Club Fakirerpool are at the bottom with 10 points playing 13 games. Arambagh Krira Sangha, PWD Sports Club and Brothers Union are equal on 13 points.
According to the by-laws, the two teams will be relegated from this level and will play in the next year’s Bangladesh Championship League.
