Kidnapping attempt in N’ganj Four people shot, one held: DB
Criminals posing as Detective Branch (DB) police attempted to abduct a flexiload (mobile recharge) businessman in Fatullah, Narayanganj. When locals intervened, the attackers opened fire indiscriminately while trying to flee, leaving at least four people injured by gunshots.
One suspect was later caught along with a motorcycle after a chase by locals.
The incident took place around 11:30 PM on Sunday (April 19) at Suman Mia’s flexiload shop in the West Rasulpur Bhangarpul area of Kutubpur, Fatullah.
According to locals, two days earlier, a man named Shamim, also known as Jewel, had taken mobile recharge worth 2,000 taka from Suman Mia’s shop but failed to pay.
He was reportedly detained and later released after paying the money. Following this dispute, 4-5 young men arrived on two motorcycles on Sunday night, introduced themselves as DB police, and attempted to take Suman away.
At that time, a local resident, Anwar Hossain, asked to see their identification. The suspects then threatened him by pointing a pistol at him. As the situation escalated, locals surrounded them. In response, the attackers fired randomly and tried to escape.
Amir Hossain was seriously injured by gunfire, while three others sustained injuries as bullets grazed different parts of their bodies. The injured were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
At one point, an angry crowd chased the attackers. Although others managed to flee with weapons, Shamim alias Jewel was caught along with a motorcycle and beaten by the public. Police later arrived at the scene, took him into custody, and recovered four bullet casings.
Fatullah Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahbub Alam said, “Four bystanders were injured in the shooting. Among them, Amir Hossain is in critical condition. The others sustained comparatively minor injuries as bullets grazed them.”
He also added that the detained individual gave different names-sometimes Shamim and sometimes Jewel. Due to injuries from the beating, he was given medical treatment. Police are trying to identify the fleeing armed suspects through interrogation, and the investigation is ongoing.
