Chamak getting praise for releasing video on dangers of online gambling

Popular TV actress Rukaiya Jahan Chamak has raised awareness about the terrible consequences and negative effects of online gambling.

She has urged the youth to stay away from the trap of online betting by releasing a video on social media.

The actress is receiving widespread praise for presenting the terrible statistics and real pictureof gambling in the video.

In the video, Chamak told the story of a young man named Shihab, who started betting out of greed for easy income of just Tk 1,000.

But later, on the pretext of withdrawing the deposited money and recovering the lost money, he took a loan from his relatives and ended up losing Tk 1 million.

Citing a 2026 report by the General Economics Division (GED), the actress said that more than 5 million people are currently involved in online gambling in Bangladesh.

If immediate action is not taken, this number is likely to exceed 20 million by 2027.

Currently, the estimated market value of online gambling in the country stands at around Tk 830 crore.

In addition, Chamak also mentioned in the video that a 2026 DB investigation identified illegal transactions worth around Tk 5 crore dailythrough a gambling network.

Highlighting the World Health Organisation’s perspective, Chamak said that gambling is not just a financial crisis, it is a serious public health and family problem.

According to statistics, about 5.5 per cent of women and 11.9 per cent of men worldwide suffer physical and mental harm due to gambling, which also increases the risk of suicide.

In his video, Chamak urged other stars and social media influencers in the country not to share links to betting apps in exchange for small advertising money.

She reminded that operating or promoting an online gambling platform is a serious crime under Section 20 of the ‘Cyber Security Ordinance 2025’, which carries a maximum penalty of 2 years in prison and a fine of up to Tk 1 crore.

Finally, Chamak urged the youth to abandon the easy way of earning money through gambling and rely on their own work and skills.

After the video was released, netizens are widely praising Chamak. They have termed this awareness video as a timely step.

They say that when many so-called stars and influencers are busy promoting betting apps for a small amount of money, Chamak’s social responsibility is exemplary.
