Port seeks greater success in maritime awareness activities
The port authority not only aims to participate in maritime awareness activities but also seeks to achieve greater success in them, said Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman, Chairman of the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA).
He made these remarks while inaugurating the MARCO3 Fundamentals Course under the EU CRIMARIO Project at the Shaheed Fazlur Rahman Munshi Auditorium on Sunday.
The main objective of the training is to enhance real-time information exchange and coordination among different agencies through the use of the Indian Ocean Region Information Exchange System (IORIS platform).
The EU CRIMARIO Project has already selected CPA as the National Focal Agency of Bangladesh. The port chairman said that more than 90 percent of Bangladesh’s foreign trade is conducted through Chattogram Port; therefore, maintaining the port’s safety and efficiency is very important. He added that this initiative reflects the growing role of Chattogram Port as a responsible partner.
The course is being conducted by Bjorn Beirens, Representative for South Asia and Tanzania, as part of the EU’s CRIMARIO II project. Trainees from the Bangladesh Navy, Bangladesh Coast Guard, and the Port Authority are participating in the course.
During this five-day training, participants will gain knowledge on various topics, including basic concepts of maritime awareness and IMO codes, reporting using the “Five W” framework on the IORIS platform, instant messaging and alert exchange between organizations, and the practical application of AIS and Skylight data layers.
Participants who successfully complete the course will receive an EU CRIMARIO certificate.
The Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) is providing internet access, computers, and all necessary technical facilities for the event.
The overall coordination of the course is being handled by Commodore Ahmed Amin Abdullah, Member of the Port and IORIS Focal Point Officer, along with Captain Asif Ahmed, Assistant Harbour Master and OIC of the IORIS Cell of CPA.
