Sarwar takes charge as interim DMP chief

Staff Reporter :

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner Md Sarwar will assume charge as the DMP Commissioner until further notice.

A gazette notification in this regard was issued by the Bangladesh Police headquarters on Thursday.
Earlier, DMP Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali submitted his resignation citing “personal and family” reasons, although his contractual tenure was scheduled to continue until November next year.

Sazzat Ali, a 1984 batch officer of the BCS Police cadre, was dismissed from service in November 2016 while serving as Additional IGP at the Police Headquarters during the previous Awami League government.

Following the fall of the Awami League government, the interim administration reinstated him. He later took charge as the 38th Police Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police on November 20, 2024.

Md Sarwar is regarded within the force as an experienced officer with extensive field-level and administrative expertise. Officials said he is expected to ensure continuity in ongoing operations and maintain law and order in the capital during the transition period.

Senior police officials noted that the appointment comes at a critical time, as the metropolitan police continue various security and crime prevention initiatives across Dhaka.

They expressed hope that the leadership change would not disrupt routine policing activities or strategic operations currently underway.
