PM seeks deeper China trade ties

Investment, development coop highlighted in Yao farewell meeting

Trade, investment and development cooperation took centre stage in Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s farewell meeting with outgoing Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen on Monday, with Bangladesh stressing the need to deepen economic ties with Beijing.

The two sides also discussed the Rohingya crisis and other issues of mutual interest during the meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office at the Bangladesh Secretariat.

Tarique underscored the importance of further expanding bilateral cooperation in trade, investment and development, while also highlighting the need for continued cooperation on the Rohingya issue.

The discussion comes as Bangladesh and China maintain extensive economic and development ties, with bilateral cooperation spanning trade, investment and infrastructure, alongside regional and humanitarian concerns.

At the outset of the meeting, Yao congratulated Tarique on his participation in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly and the successful completion of his engagements in New York.

The Chinese ambassador conveyed Beijing’s continued support for Bangladesh’s development efforts and expressed hope that relations between the two countries would be strengthened further in the coming days.

Yao has served as China’s ambassador to Bangladesh during a period of active engagement between Dhaka and Beijing.

His farewell call provided an opportunity to review bilateral cooperation and reaffirm the importance both sides attach to the relationship.

The meeting followed Tarique’s participation in the UN General Assembly in New York, where he held a series of official engagements.

Both sides reiterated their interest in strengthening Bangladesh-China relations through greater economic cooperation and continued engagement on issues of mutual concern, including the Rohingya crisis.

The Chinese envoy was accompanied by Deputy Chief of Mission Liu Yuyin. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir and Bangladesh Investment Development Authority Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun were also present.
