Crude bomb explodes in Barishal

A crude bomb exploded on the Dhaka-Barishal highway near the office of the deputy inspector general of police for Barisal Range in the Kashipur area of Barisal city on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Witnesses alleged that a group of Awami League activists brought out a sudden procession around 2:15pm, chanting “Joy Bangla” slogans, before a crude bomb was detonated near the DIG
office. The group then reportedly fled the area.

The explosion caused panic among nearby shopkeepers and residents.

A local shopkeeper, identified as Tamim, said more than 50 people marched from the direction of Kashipur School and College and that a crude bomb was exploded on the highway near the DIG office.

However, the identities and political affiliation of those involved have not yet been independently established.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Barisal Metropolitan Police Md Anisur Rahman said police went to the scene after receiving reports of a loud explosion.

He said evidence of an explosion had been found on the road and that police were examining CCTV footage from the area to identify those responsible.

No casualties or injuries were reported in the initial account. Police have not yet announced any arrests in connection with the incident.
