Import-export back to normal at Chattogram port
Chattagram Bureau:
Chattagram Port has fully operationalized after two days as customs workers return to work, import-export activities have returned to normal.
Although operational activities have slowed down since Sunday night, container handling and goods unloading activities at Chattagram Port have returned to their usual rhythm since Monday morning.
Containers carrying export goods are coming to the port from various private depots in Chattagram, and containers carrying import goods from the port are going to the depot. Chattagram Port Secretary Md. Omar Faruk said, “NBR workers have returned to normal activities at the port after calling off their strike.
Container loading and unloading from ships, goods unloading and containers carrying export goods arriving at the port are all going on in full swing.” He expressed hope that it would be possible to return to normal soon by removing the containers that had accumulated in the yard during the two-day standstill.
The ‘complete shutdown’ program of NBR officials and employees demanding the resignation of the chairman has brought all types of import and export activities through Chattagram port to a standstill for the last two days.
The number of containers piled up in the port yard has increased due to non-discharge. The same situation has arisen at all land ports in the country.
In this situation, the government took action on Sunday (29 June). Declaring the services of NBR as ‘essential’, it issued a stern warning to the protesters to join the work.
In the meantime, the ACC informed that it has started investigating the ‘corruption’ of the six protesting NBR officials.
According to the previous schedule, Finance Advisor Salehuddin Ahmed did not want to sit in on the discussion with the protesters on Sunday.
He expressed his inability to talk to them while the complete shutdown was still in progress. Meanwhile, the government announced the formation of an advisory committee with five advisors to resolve the crisis.
The Finance Advisor sat in on discussions with the leaders of several business organizations. That is where the solution lies.
In that meeting, based on ‘positive assurances’, the NBR Reform Unity Council lifted the shutdown program with the mediation of the leaders of the business association.
With the program withdrawn, the Chattagram Customs office became bustling with C&F agents from Monday morning.
All activities including bill entry submission and customs clearance of goods began.
