Student injured as BM College hall ceiling plaster falls

A student was injured after a section of ceiling plaster fell on him at Mahatma Ashwini Kumar (Degree) Hall of Government BM College in Barishal on Friday, creating panic among residents of the ageing hall building.

The incident occurred in Block D of the hall. The injured student was identified as Ariful Islam, a final-year master’s student in the Department of Accounting.

Ariful said he was preparing for an admission test on Friday afternoon when a portion of the ceiling suddenly collapsed with a loud noise and struck him. He narrowly escaped a serious accident.

Hall Superintendent SM Asaduzzaman said the authorities were aware that parts of the building had become unsafe.

“For the time being, we are shifting students from the dilapidated rooms to safer ones,” he said.
He added that the matter had already been reported to the college principal and the Education Engineering Department.

Government BM College Principal Professor Dr Sheikh Md Tajul Islam said arrangements had been made for the injured student’s treatment.

He said the Education Engineering Department had previously been informed about the need to renovate or reconstruct the old building.

“Following the latest incident, the college authorities will take the necessary administrative steps regarding the building,” the principal said.

Students alleged that Blocks A and D of the century-old Degree Hall had remained in a dangerous condition for a long time.
