Kiwis fight back against Tigers

A century by Kane Williamson helped the visiting New Zealand to fight back against Bangladesh scoring 266 for the loss of eight wickets on the second day of the first Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

Earlier, the Tigers resumed their first innings with the overnight score of 310 for the loss of nine wickets but failed to add any run losing their last wicket on the second day .

Later, Williamson notched up a sedate 104. His 205-ball innings was laced with 11 fours. Williamson reached his 29th 100-run landmark playing 189 deliveries with 11 fours. He was cleanly bowled out by left-arm spinner Taijul Islam, who played the key role to restrict the Kiwis to a modest total on the second day.
Taijul Islam bowled extremely well and finished his superb spell as 30-7-89-4.

Taijul Islam gave his team early breakthrough as opener Tom Latham (21) was caught at the fine leg by Nayeem Hasan off the left-arm spinner when New Zealand’s score was 36.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz struck as opener Devon Conway (12) was caught at the silly point by Shahadat Hossain off the right-arm spinner when the visitor’s total was 44 for the loss of two wickets.

One-down Kane Williamson and second-down Henry Nicholls built a worthy partnership scoring together 54 runs for the third wicket partnership before Henry (19) was caught behind by wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan off Shoriful Islam when the touring side’s score was 98 for the loss of three wickets.

After Henry’s dismissal, Williamson and third-down Daryl Mitchell put on together 66 runs in the fourth wicket stand before Daryl Mitchell was stumped out by Nurul Hasan off Taijul Islam when the tourists’ total was 164 for the loss of four wickets.
Mitchell hit a polished 41. His 54-ball innings had three fours and one sixes.

Promising right-arm spinner Nayeem Hasan struck as Tom Blundell (6) was caught behind by Nurul Hasan off right-arm spinner when New Zealand’s score was 175 for the loss of five wickets.

Williamson and fifth-down Glenn Phillips made another remarkable partnership adding together 78 runs in the six-wicket stand before Phillips was caught at the slip by Najmul Hossain Shanto off occasional bowler Mominul Haque when the Kiwis’ total was 253 for the loss of 253 for the loss of six wickets.

Phillips knocked a fine 42 from 62 deliveries with five fours and a sixer.

After Williamson’s departure, Number-Nine batter Ish Sodhi (0) was caught at the short leg by Shahadat Hossain off Taijul Islam when the visitors’ score was 264 for the loss of eight wickets.

Kyle Jamieson was on 7, while Tim Southee was on one before the two umpires pocketed the bails for the second day.

Mominul Haque, Shoriful Islam, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Nayeem Hasan took one wicket each for two, 44, 57, 61 runs respectively.
