‘Uniting BNP in Faridganj Is My Main Goal’: Motahar Hossain Patwary
The 48th founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was observed in Faridganj upazila of Chandpur on Tuesday through various programmes, including a colourful rally, tree plantation, discussion meeting and prayer session.
The upazila and municipal units of BNP, along with its affiliated and associate organisations, organised the programmes to mark the anniversary.
A large rally was brought out from Faridganj Bus Stand around noon. It paraded through different streets of the town before ending at the bus stand. BNP leaders and activists joined the rally carrying national and party flags, banners, festoons and party symbols. Their enthusiasm, accompanied by music and slogans, was noticeable throughout the rally.
Several senior leaders of the Faridganj upazila BNP were seen participating in the rally together after a long time. Grassroots leaders and activists present at the event said the participation of the senior leaders together had created renewed enthusiasm and optimism among party workers.
Earlier, BNP National Executive Committee member and former general secretary of Faridganj Upazila BNP, CIP Motahar Hossain Patwary, took part in a tree plantation programme at the Ambia-Yunus Foundation field along with district and upazila BNP leaders.
Following the rally, a discussion meeting was held at Faridganj Bus Stand. Sharif Mohammad Yunus, former president of the upazila BNP and chief coordinator of the central-announced anniversary programmes, presided over the meeting, while former general secretary of the upazila BNP Mojibur Rahman Dulal moderated it.
BNP National Executive Committee member, former general secretary of Faridganj Upazila BNP and social worker CIP Motahar Hossain Patwary attended the meeting as the chief guest.
Among those who addressed the meeting were former general secretary of the upazila BNP Azizur Rahman; former president of the municipal BNP Sirajul Islam Papak; Harunur Rashid; former joint convener of the upazila BNP Abu Zafar Khasru Molla; Nazrul Islam Patwary; Md Zakir Patwary; Abdur Rahman; Md Masud; former vice-president of the municipal BNP Harunur Rashid; Abul Kashem Patwary; Shahabuddin Babul; former general secretary of the municipal BNP Jahangir Alam; former president of the upazila Jubo Dal Amzad Hossain Shipon; former general secretary Jahangir Alam Nantu; and former member secretary Abdul Matin, among others.
Addressing the meeting, Motahar Hossain Patwary said the people of Bangladesh had lived under an authoritarian regime for 17 years. During that period, people’s rights to freedom of expression and voting were obstructed, while BNP leaders and activists had to face various challenges and adversities.
He said that after a long period, the people had entrusted BNP with the responsibility of governing the country through a free and fair election.
“Time is needed to restore discipline in the country after overcoming the disorderly situation of the past,” he said, adding that BNP would honour the people’s trust and support.
Recalling the contributions of BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, Patwary said Ziaur Rahman had played an important role in Bangladesh’s independence and Liberation War. He was awarded the title ‘Bir Uttam’ in recognition of his heroic contribution to the Liberation War.
Extending greetings to the people of Faridganj on the occasion of BNP’s 48th founding anniversary, Patwary said, “If I get the opportunity to lead the organisation, restoring discipline within the party and uniting its leaders and activists will be my priorities. Uniting BNP in Faridganj will be my main goal.”
He urged party leaders and activists to put aside their differences and work together in the greater interest of the organisation.
The programme concluded with a prayer and munajat seeking blessings for BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, and the party’s leaders and activists.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was founded on September 1, 1978, under the leadership of then-President Ziaur Rahman. Since its establishment, the party has emerged as one of Bangladesh’s major political organisations through various political movements and struggles.
