Dengue danger deepens

Bangladesh has recorded its highest daily number of dengue hospitalisations this year, with 1,163 patients admitted to hospitals across the country in the 24 hours to 8am on Monday (31 August), according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The latest figures highlight the growing dengue threat as the number of patients requiring hospital treatment continues to rise.

The previous highest daily hospitalisation figure was 1,097, recorded just a day earlier on 30 August.

Four more people died of dengue during the latest 24-hour period, taking the country’s death toll from the mosquito-borne disease to 97 this year.

Of the latest deaths, one was reported from Dhaka North City Corporation, two from Dhaka South City Corporation and one from Mymensingh Division.

Meanwhile, 1,017 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals during the same period, bringing the total number of recoveries this year to 33,205.

With the latest admissions, the number of dengue cases recorded across the country this year has risen to 35,846.

The continuing rise in hospitalisations and deaths underscores the growing health hazard posed by dengue, particularly as the disease places increasing pressure on hospitals and health services.

The sharp increase in daily admissions also signals the need for stronger preventive measures against the spread of the mosquito-borne disease.
