BNP’s Faridpur, Mymensingh mass sit-in foiled by police, JL and BCL attacks, 37 injured

The ruling party’s attack, arrest and vandalism continue against the BNP’s programs in two separate districts of the country.
In Faridpur, there was an attack on the prescheduled sit-in programme of BNP’s Faridpur district on Wednesday.
The attack took place (July 11) around 12:30 PM in the city’s Ambika Maidan during the BNP’s sit-in program.
BNP alleged that the associate bodies of ruling party Awami League (AL), Jubo League (JL) and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), and police allegedly attacked the scheduled mass sit-in of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Faridpur wearing helmets.
In the attack, about 35 BNP leaders and activists were injured along with the police. Police fired 16 rounds of rubber bullets to control the situation. Later, the police arrested at least 10 BNP activists from the spot.
Local BNP leaders and activists have claimed that Awami League men, wearing helmets, carried out the attack on the prescheduled sit-in programme of BNP’s Faridpur district unit, organised to press home their 10-point demands and protest against the electricity price hike,
And Awami League men also hurled crude bombs targeting their programme stage, they said.
The member-secretary of Faridpur unit BNP AK Kibria told the media that about 35 leaders and activists were seriously wounded in the attack. Of them, three critically injured activists were rushed to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) for better treatment.
Meanwhile, the district Awami League President Shamim Haque said, “We were holding a rally at Rasel Square on Wednesday afternoon as a part of our scheduled events announced centrally. At that time, we heard that a massive procession of BNP halted the traffic movements between Goalchamot Shree Angan and Alipur graveyard and created public sufferings.”
“Then we sought assistance from the police. Nobody from AL obstructed BNP’s mass sit-in,” he added.
Kotwali police station officer-in-charge M Jalil said five policemen were injured in this incident and 10 have been detained from the spot.
In Mymensingh, there have been allegations of vandalism of three buses carrying BNP activists on their way to the mass sit public gathering program in the district.
Two BNP men including a student leader were injured in this incident.
On Wednesday (January 11) around 11 o’clock, the vandalism of the bus took place in the Jublighat and Zero Point areas of Mymensingh city.
In this regard, BNP Acting Office Secretary Emran Saleh told the media saying that the activists were coming from Kishoreganj in two buses to participate in BNP’s mass gathering program in Mymensingh. On the way, Awami League and its allied organizations stopped the bus in Jublighat area of the city and vandalized two buses with hockey sticks.
In this regard, Mymensingh Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shah Kamal Akand said, I have been in the BNP location program area since morning. I have heard of incidents of bus chases and vandalism. But the details of who is involved in this incident are not yet known. However, we are looking into the matter.
