Police have arrested Zahirul Islam, the driver of a private car, in connection with the beating death of Altaf Hossain, a member of the Police Special Branch (SB), in Aminbazar, Savar. He was arrested on Sunday morning from the Aminbazar area. Police said Zahirul Islam is both the driver and owner of the private car involved.
Savar Model Police Station OC Saiful Alam said the prime suspect and car owner Zahirul Islam has been arrested, and operations are ongoing to arrest others involved in the incident.
The incident occurred on Saturday night in the Bardeshi area of Aminbazar. SB member Altaf Hossain was beaten to death after he intervened when he saw a group of young men assaulting an elderly auto-rickshaw driver. His son was also severely beaten during the attack. According to the victim’s family and eyewitnesses, SI Altaf Hossain was returning to his rented home near a factory on Saturday night when he came across several young men in a private car beating an elderly auto-rickshaw driver. When he tried to intervene, the youths turned on him as well.
At one point, to save himself, Altaf Hossain identified himself as a police officer and ran into his nearby factory. The accused then allegedly called 15 to 20 more people and launched an attack on the factory.
The attackers broke into the factory, smashing machinery, furniture, and other property. They then brutally beat Altaf Hossain and his son Md. Arif, leaving both critically injured.
Neighbours rescued the father and son and took them to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where the attending doctor pronounced SI Altaf Hossain dead. His son Arif remains hospitalised in critical condition.
