BB must answer why it failed to stop anomalies at Islami Bank
Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal looked hopeless as he asked the questioning journalists yesterday to give him written complaints about the alleged financial irregularities at the Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited (IBBL). It is only then he would look into the recent loan scams in this most popular private bank.
No, Mr. Minister, it is not for the journalists to submit a letter of complaint to the government asking it to initiate an inquiry! Journalists investigated the alleged anomalies in granting loans to the tune of Tk 7,246 crore this year to nine companies grossly violating the banking rules. Among these companies there are some that only exist on paper. Journalists have done their job exposing the scam, it is now the duty of the government and the Bangladesh Bank to provide a satisfactory explanation about the alleged irregularities in disbursing the loan.
But people know for sure they cannot give such an answer and that is why he ridiculously asked journalists to submit written complaints. Even when these dubious loans have created distrust among the bank’s clients, another report published in a national daily yesterday revealed how one of the largest business conglomerate, the Chattogram-based S Alam Group, lifted Tk 30,000 crore from IBBL alone when the company was entitled to borrow maximum Tk 215 crore according to rules. A Bangladesh Bank audit report also highlighted the breach of the banking rule.
The loan disbursement happened after the ace private bank of the country became a target of political vendetta and S Alam Group, a pro-government business conglomerate, took control of the bank in 2017 after the government had removed people loyal to Jammat-e-Islami from the bank.
The IBBL that earned the trust of people of Bangladesh for years of honest work and integrity soon fell into a quagmire of dishonesty and disrepute once the controlling power of it was transferred. Curiously enough, though it was in the central bank’s knowledge that the bank’s money was being misused, it did not take any action to bring people responsible for the anomalies to book.
How could it do that? It is these dishonest and corrupt people who formed or supported this government that does not have people’s mandate. Their very goal is to be in power and plunder the public money giving a damn to law and justice. They have brought Bangladesh now to its present bankrupt state.
