2 die as dengue cases surge

Dengue cases are rising in Chapainawabganj, with 141 new patients admitted to the district hospital in 48 hours and two deaths reported at the 250-Bedded Chapainawabganj District Hospital.

They died at the hospital’s dengue corner in the early hours of Wednesday.
The deceased were Ferdousi Khatun, wife of Ariful Islam of Shibtala Chandlai area in Chapainawabganj town, and Mahabbat Ali, child of Monirul Islam of Arambagh area.

Dr Mahbub Hasan, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of the 250-Bedded Chapainawabganj District Hospital, confirmed the deaths and said 141 new dengue patients had been admitted to the hospital over the past 48 hours.

“Ferdousi Khatun tested positive for dengue and died while undergoing treatment. Although it was not possible to conduct a dengue test on the child, he had several symptoms of the disease,” he said.

Ferdousi Khatun was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday after being infected with dengue. Her NS1 test later returned positive. She died at the dengue corner in the early hours of Wednesday while undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, child Mahabbat Ali was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday night with a high fever, body aches and other symptoms of dengue. However, he died in the early hours of Wednesday before an NS1 or antibody test could be conducted. According to doctors, the child had several symptoms of dengue.

Hospital sources said more than 100 patients are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital’s dengue corner. The sudden increase in patients has put doctors and nurses under additional pressure to provide treatment.

Meanwhile, local residents have called for intensified mosquito-control activities and increased public awareness to contain the dengue outbreak.
