PM briefs President on US visit

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday paid a courtesy call on President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at Bangabhaban.

It was the first meeting between the President and the Prime Minister at Bangabhaban since Mirza Fakhrul assumed office.

The Prime Minister arrived at Bangabhaban at around 3:00pm and was received by the President.

Later, the President’s military secretary, secretary, press secretary and other senior officials were introduced to the Prime Minister, according to a press release issued by Bangabhaban.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister briefed the President on his recent visit to the United States, including his participation in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

He also briefed the President on his meetings on the sidelines with heads of state and government, the UN secretary-general and senior UN officials, as well as representatives of international economic and development partner organisations.

The President congratulated the Prime Minister on his address to the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, describing it as “far-sighted, determined and direction-setting”.

He said the speech reflected Bangladesh’s national interests and the hopes and aspirations of its people, while presenting the country’s position on major global issues.

Mirza Fakhrul said the visit contributed to strengthening Bangladesh’s position internationally and advancing the country’s interests.

He also said the visit helped expand and strengthen Bangladesh’s bilateral and multilateral relations.

The President and the Prime Minister discussed various issues concerning national and state interests.

The President thanked the Prime Minister for visiting Bangabhaban.
