Locals resist seriously

DSCC in crisis on sweepers’ temporary houses ‘Inhuman attitude’

Reza Mahmud :
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) faces serious obstacle from the local people while arranging temporary accommodation for the cleaners.
“It is really unfortunate that local people say ‘no’ to our plan for the corporation’s 1000 sweepers. We need to accommodate them. But about one year is needed to complete the construction work. In this circumstances, the city corporation is trying to build some temporary buildings in its lands, but the nearby residents aggressively oppose it,” said corporation Chief Executive Officer, Khan Mohammad Billal to The New Nation yesterday.
City corporation sources said, the Prime Minister’s office has sanctioned fund for building 19 multi-storied buildings. The corporation started to break its old and risky buildings in ‘sweeper colonies’. It has demolished Dholpur sweeper colony building which was most risky. The other buildings enlisted for demolition are at Doyagonj, Sutrapur, Dholaikhal, Ganoktuli and Nilanjana sweeper colonies beside Bangladesh math near the Nazim Uddin Road and others.
The new buildings will be built in those areas including Sayedabad truck terminal area which was freed from the illegal grabbers.
According to the city corporation, there are about one thousand sweepers needing rehabilitation. Of them, 255 cleaners are living in Doyagonj, 110 in Nilanjana, 250 in Ganoktuli, 86 in Dholpur and around one hundred in Sutrapur sweeper colonies.
The sweepers now have to reside some where on temporary basis as the city corporation is struggling to accommodate them.
When the city corporation was trying to rehabilitate them temporarily in the city’s Faridabad area in a open land of the corporation and Bahadurpur lane government community center, the local people resisted. They warned the corporation officials not to accommodate sweepers there.
The same incident took place in Dholaikhal and Sayedabad areas. Hundreds of local residents cordoned off the corporation officials. Later the Rapid Action Battalion and Police came to rescue them from the angry people.
“When I heard the news that some disorderly crowed cordoned off our officials, I rushed to Faridabad. But the people continuously showed wrath. Then I requested the elite force and the Police for help. Then they came and protected us,” said Khandokar Millatul Isalm, the city corporation Additional Chief Officer of Waste Management, to The New Nation.
Beside, one of the residents opposing the initiatives said, preferring anonymity, “If we let the makeshift houses for them, they may create dirty environment in our areas.”
Khandokar Millatul Isalm said it is very unfortunate to resist the home making initiative for the city corporations cleaners.
He said, “Some people actively oppose it and force us to stop. The others support them. If they could not stay in the city, how will they be able to make the city clean? The people should consider it.”
