India defeat West Indies

Sports Reporter : India registered a seven-wicket victory over reigning champions West Indies in their Group B clash of the ICC World Twenty20 Cricket at the flood-lit Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Sunday.

Chasing West Indies paltry total of 129 for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs, India sailed home scoring 130 for the loss of three wickets when they had two balls to spare.

India made a poor start losing their first wicket for just one run.

Then Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli salvaged their team from danger contributing together 106 runs in the second wicket stand before Virat Kohli was cleanly bowled out by Andre Russell when India’s score was 107 for the loss of two wickets.

Opener Rohit Sharma remained undefeated with 62. He hit five boundaries and two over boundaries in his 55-ball innings while Virat Kohli notched up a splendid 54 from 41 balls hitting five fours and a six.

Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels and Samuel Badree took one wicket apiece.

Earlier, West Indies batsmen failed to make any notable partnership.

Dashing opener Chris Gayle hit a polished 34 from 33 balls with two sixes and one four while Lendl Simmons made a modest 27 off 22 balls featuring two sixes and one four.

Ravindra Jadeja grabbed three wickets instead of 48 runs while Amit Mishra captured two wickets at the cost of 18 runs and Ravichandran Ashin took one wicket for 24 runs.
