India’s Nagalandliquor deaths rise to 19

At least 19 people have died after allegedly consuming contaminated liquor in India’s Nagaland state, a senior police officer said today (26 September).

Mokokchung district reported eight deaths and Tuensang district 11 over the past two days following consumption of suspected illicit liquor, Senior Superintendent of Police Vesupra Kezo was quoted by PTI as saying.

Police have formed a team to trace the supply chain of the suspected adulterated liquor. Nagaland has had a prohibition law in place since 1990.

Samples of the suspected poisoned liquor have been sent to Guwahati for forensic examination to determine the cause of the deaths, Kezo said.
“We have obtained some leads, but it is too premature to disclose details,” he added.

Following the deaths, police conducted multiple raids, arrested 19 people and seized nearly 3,000 bottles of liquor.
