Sayedee files review plea
UNB, Dhaka :
Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee filed a petition on Sunday with the Supreme Court (SC) to review its verdict commuting his death penalty to jail unto death for crimes against humanity during the war against Pakistan.
Sayedee’s counsel Joynul Abedin Tuhin said he submitted the review plea with the apex court in the morning based on 16 points seeking release in the war crimes case. Earlier on January 12, the prosecution filed a review petition seeking death penalty for the influential Jamaat leader for his crimes against humanity during the war in 1971.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said state counsel Syed Mahbubur Rahman submitted the review petition with a SC bench concerned for the case. The move came nearly two weeks after the SC released the full text of its verdict that had commuted the punishment.
The SC on December 31, 2015 released the full text of its verdict commuting Sayedee’s death penalty to jail unto death in the case for his crimes against humanity during the war. On September 17, 2014, the Appellate Division of the SC commuted Sayedee’s death penalty to imprisonment until death.
On February 28, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Sayedee to death for war crimes.
On March 28, 2013, Sayedee filed an appeal with the apex court seeking acquittal from the charges and the government side on the same day separately appealed to the Supreme Court demanding capital punishment in all the eight charges he faced.
Sayedee was involved in the incidents like killing, looting, rape and forcefully converting Hindus into Muslims in Parerhat of Pirojpur district.
