CBI arrests Anup Chetia for a 1988 murder

Court sends him to 6-day transit remand

A special court in New Delhi has sent Assamese separatist leader Anup Chetia to 6-days transit remand following an appeal by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
India’s central investigating agency earlier on Thursday arrested the founder general secretary of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) in connection with a March 1988 murder. CBI sources said the case had been registered at the request of the Assam government. He may be taken to Guwahti any day and produced before the CBI special court after the completion of the six-day remand, sources said.
Chetia alias Golap Barua was brought back to India after Bangladesh handed him over to a special CBI team on Wednesday morning.
Chetia is wanted in several cases in Assam including murder, abductions, and extortion. The separatist leader was arrested in Dhaka in 1997 and later sought political asylum in Bangladesh thrice in 2005, 2008 and in 2011 after the completion of a seven-year jail term.
He was arrested in connection with cross-border intrusion, possession of fake passports and illegally keeping foreign currency. Despite the expiry of his term, Chetia was in jail under a 2003 High Court order, pending a decision on his asylum plea.
“He has been brought back so that he can participate in the ongoing peace talks involving the Government of India, Government of Assam and ULFA,” a senior government official told bdnews24.com.
The pro-talks faction of the ULFA, headed by its chairman Aurobindo Rajkhowa, had earlier made Chetia’s extradition a pre-condition for the talks. Rajkhaowa believes Chetia’s participation is vital to the dialogue.
