Salahuddin Noman Chy 29th foreign secretary

Career diplomat Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury has been appointed Bangladesh’s 29th foreign secretary, replacing Asad Alam Siam, who is set to become the country’s High Commissioner to India.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a notification on Sunday announcing the appointment.

It said Chowdhury, currently serving as a secretary at the ministry, would hold the post of foreign secretary until further orders. The appointment will take immediate effect in the public interest.

A farewell ceremony for Siam and an introduction ceremony for Chowdhury were also held at the Foreign Ministry on Sunday.

Siam has served as foreign secretary since June 20, 2025.

He is now being posted to New Delhi as Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India.

Chowdhury, a 17th-batch officer of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Foreign Affairs) cadre, previously served as Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York.

He took up the UN assignment in January 2025 before being recalled to the Foreign Ministry. He also accompanied Prime Minister Tarique Rahman during his recent visit to Japan. Before his UN posting, Chowdhury served as Bangladesh’s ambassador to Nepal.

Since joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1998, the career diplomat has held various positions at Bangladesh’s diplomatic missions in New Delhi and Islamabad, the Bangladesh Consulate General in New York and the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations.
